T1 Services

T1 (DS1) is the established standard for a fast, reliable connection to the Internet for business use. It is also often used as a reliable method to connect two or more business locations in a private network. In the telephone world, the T1 is used for the delivery of voice trunks from telephone companies to businesses that have a large number of phone lines. Each voice T1 can carry up to 24 voice lines.

An Internet T1 consists of two parts. The first component is called the 'local loop'. The pricing for this part is covered under a tariff filed with the Illinois Commerce Commission. An SBC T1 local loop with a 3 year commitment usually runs about $250 a month plus a mileage charge and taxes. The T1 circuit is always provided by the ILEC (Incumbent Local Exchange Carrier). The ILECs in our area are SBC for most of Rockford, Loves Park and Machesney Park, and Verizon for all of the surrounding communities. You might be buying the loop from someone else (like us) but the copper and the initial configuration comes from your ILEC. A clear-channel full T1 loop is engineered to deliver 1.544Mbps full-duplex (both directions at the same time i.e. 1.5Mbps upload and 1.5Mbps download).

The second component of an Internet T1 is called the 'port'. The port is the pipe to the Internet. All ports are not the same and may be sold as fractional, burstable, shared, full, protected, or bonded. The reliability and performance of your Internet feed depends highly upon the quality, competence, connectivity, and engineering of your ISP. That is why T1s will vary greatly among vendors. Although your local loop may be able to carry 1.5Mbps of data, there is a good chance that your ISP will not have the bandwidth to deliver that much data. We have seen low cost T1s sold in the Rockford area as full-1.5Mbps that could not even deliver 768kbps.

A T1 connection requires a router and CSU/DSU interface to connect to your computer network. Cisco Systems is the world leader in high quality Internet routers with an 89 percent market share. We provide and maintain Cisco routers for our T1 customers and have Cisco parts and certified technicians on staff.

Most smaller ISPs will only have one or two T1s for their Internet backbone. With our fiber optic OC-3 connection to SBC through Chicago, and our redundant licensed DS-3 microwave link to AT&T through Madison, Rock River Internet can provide your business with fractional, full, and bonded T1 (DS1) service at lower costs than our competitors and with the reliability, service, and expert local support, that our customers have come to appreciate. Because of our unique backbone, we are the only company in the area that can offer a truely protected T1 using both a fiber/copper network and wireless network for unmatched reliability.

We have multi-homed DS-3 connections on diverse paths from the Internet backbone to our downtown Rockford NOC (Network Operations Center). We use redundant Cisco 7200 family core routers and layer 3 distribution switches running HSRP for automatic failover and BGP4 routing protocol. Our network has fault tolerance that is unsurpassed in the Rockford area. We are not at the mercy of any one provider's stability and are engineered to run 24/7/365.

All of our dedicated connections include 24/7 monitoring for performance and connectivity. We handle all technical details and local loop service issues on a 24/7 basis.
