March 2, 2001 - We're done moving!

The Friday move went as smoothly as can be expected. The servers were shut down at our old location at 5:40am and came back up at our new location just before 7:00am. We had a few problems with some of our T1s and dedicated ISDN lines. This caused some busy signals around 10:00am and some problems for a few of our dedicated customers. The new analog voice lines were completed late Friday afternoon and our new downtown wireless radio equipment was installed and running on Saturday.

I want to extend a huge thanks to Ameritech and UUnet for making our move a priority and to their technicians and managers who worked extended hours during the week in order to make our move deadline happen.

February 27, 2001 - Latest Move Update - Changes

The T1 and PRI installs were completed today and signed off by Ameritech. We will be running tests on them tomorrow (Wednesday) along with our new UUnet T1. Ameritech also installed new analog voice lines today. On the advice of Ameritech, the cut over time has been moved forward to Friday morning at 6:00 am. If everything goes as planned, our total down-time should not exceed 30 minutes during the cut over.

After about 16 months of trials with USXChange (a.k.a. Choice One Communications) we are switching our inbound PRIs (dial-up lines) and analog voice lines back to Ameritech. During these trials, we had three or four serious mishaps that took down all or part of our dial-up service.

New wireless equipment should be arriving Wednesday and will begin the install on our new downtown wireless POP later in the afternoon if weather permits.

February 24, 2001 - Move Update

We have been assigned an Ameritech project manager and we have a time estimate. Ameritech will be installing our new T1s and phone lines between February 27 and March 2. Our new location is one block away from the Ameritech Main CO. We have already completed the pre-wiring for our new location so installation and test times should be fairly short. If everything goes as planned, we should be cutting over to the new circuits on Saturday March 3rd early in the morning. Our total down-time should be about 30 minutes during the cut over. Watch this page for more details as plans can change.

Many of you have heard about the problems plaguing our current building on the news over the past few weeks (the original Barber-Colman Plant at 1300 Rock Street). We have enjoyed the facility, made many friends, and have been loyal tenants here for over 16 years. Unfortunately, the current owners and managers have been negligent in paying bills and maintenance. In our promise to provide reliable 24/7 Internet service, we are being forced to move to a new location.

Our new location is in the Rockford Trust building at State and Wyman and where we are located on the 8th floor. Please send all bill payments to this new address.

We have started on the wiring and rooftop work and expect to be moving our network around the end of February. The exact date and time will be posted here. We will do this with as little impact on our customers as possible. We should be down for about 30 minutes during the move and it will on a weekend during the early morning. We are still working out the details with Ameritech.

We have also had many bumps since switching our backbone over to UUnet just after the first of the year. Our new location will have a completely new circuit and routing to Chicago. UUnet has assured us that all the reliability problems will go away when we switch to the new circuit. As added insurance, we will be adding a second high-speed backbone connection to the Internet with another tier-one provider as soon as possible. That will give us the redundancy that we need in order to avoid problems like this in the future.

We thank you for your support and understanding over this difficult time as we would not exist without our loyal customer base.
